BLANK IN THREE ACTS resignifies the blank page by unfolding time and textures. The page has never been blank: it condenses the cartography of a creative process and draws the map with invisible ink to inhabit the void.

As a play in three acts, this new proposal invites you to experience the design processes of Rozana Montiel’s studio. The line is a vector that leads us to action, to the body and to the word. Following the path of a line, one moves from the black box to the white box, from the void to the act, from a playground to the creation of space.

The paper is laid out to form a wall, folds into a maze of models, vanishes like the flickering light on a movie screen. The same element builds different spaces by its sole transformation. Fifty projects drawn freehand at different scales form a net to catch in the act the mysterious moment in which an idea is conceived.

ACT I  INHABITING THE VOID

INHABITING THE VOID is an interaction with thousands of blank sheets that, for a year, hovered on the walls of the museum hall behind closed doors because the mounting of the Rozana Montiel exhibit to which they belonged was interrupted due to the 2020 pandemic. A year later, when museum doors were reopened, we found a blank landscape that spoke for itself: the blank pages told a story through their ghosts of dust. Like a broken clock, these sheets marked the exact instant people’s lives stopped.

This is how this first act was born: a gesture to INHABIT THE VOID and reflect on how the word, the body and the line could be rediscovered. The triad’s dynamic generated new spaces beyond the physical manifestation. The space of embodiment, the space of the mind, the space of emotion, when inhabited inside/out, produced other ways of being, doing and relating.

INHABITING THE VOID brings together a series of performance acts developed by Rozana Montiel, Mar Sierra and Era Antiló exploring empty space through words and movement. Together they trace the map to discover and inhabit creative action. To reencounter creative time, it is necessary to meet the void: inhalation and exhalation.

ACT II BLANK THINKING SHEETS

A blank room: a space to think about the relationships between void and architecture. The void is a central element in the composition of meaning. A design language acquires meaning in the empty space of the blank page.

BLANK THINKING SHEETS redraws the projects of Rozana Montiel’s studio on sheets of recycled paper that, at the end of the exhibition, will be recycled as notebooks to inspire, write and trace the creative experience. The lines on the paper are an exercise of discovery, narration and interpretation. They redraw vestigial traces to imagine the world like words in a book.

The layout formed by the pages covering the walls of the exhibition form a mosaic of texts and textures, a city grid, a design grid, a draughtsman’s window, an invisible network, a book with torn pages. At the center of the room, the sheets are folded into 3D figures. Paper is redefined as a plan, wall, model, light. The same element is transformed to build different spaces.

ACT III MANIFESTO

A MANIFESTO is to act parting from certain principles to turn actions into projects. We move from the abstract to the concrete, from monochrome to color. The lines on paper acquire materiality, dimension and meaning; design manifests actions that make us aware of our construction of space.

  1. STAND GROUND

We are flexible enough  to make concessions without compromising our principles: we actively listen to the needs of our stakeholders and stand for them.

  1. FACILITATE PLACEMAKING

We hold a vision of place that interconnects community because communities are an anchor for equity, diversity and resilience.

  1. CHANGE THE SPATIAL PERCEPTION

We change the collective perception of space through site-actions, playful spatial readings that activate the potential of a place.

  1. CHANGE BARRIERS INTO BOUNDARIES

We recover spaces for public use by transforming barriers into inhabitable borders that rebuild the social fabric.

  1. RESIGNIFY MATERIALS

We create a sense of identity and belonging through materials, textures and atmospheres in dialogue with the local landscape.

  1. RECYCLE AND REUSE

We convert underused and disused spaces into places of resilience by recycling extant infrastructure.

  1. WORK WITH TEMPORALITY

We reactivate the social time of the space considering the evolving needs of occupants and the different synchronous uses of a site.

  1. BUILD NARRATIVES

We tell stories in the way we represent our projects; stories are another way of spatial knowledge.

  1. APPROACH THE LANDSCAPE AS A PROGRAM

We make the landscape part of the program by designing architecture that becomes ecological infrastructure and supports ecotones or transitional spaces between different ecosystems.

  1. SEARCH CONTENT IN CONTEXT

We reread local practices, territory and the site acting in line with the cultural landscape.

  1. BEAUTY IS A BASIC RIGHT

We design spaces with the same respect we hold for sacred places by designing inclusive and accessible places for all.
